PERSONALITY:

"A knight lives to serve—to aid those in need."

Ishgard is a cruel and harsh place, perpetually plagued by war that has been raging for centuries, and all but aggressive to outsiders in any fashion. Few and far between are those willing to offer a friendly welcome to adventurers that find themselves in the icy cold of the lands surrounding it.

Haurchefant, however, is an outlier in this regard. Having grown up the bastard son of an influential nobleman, he knew well how critical his people were of those outside the status quo, how judgmental they could be. And while his father had been kind enough to raise him as his own son, and he was treated well enough by a neighboring noble boy, his step-mother made sure to remind him of what he was. And while she did indeed shape some aspects of his personality, it was his father's willingness to accept him despite everything that gave him the viewpoints he would inherently gain in adulthood. People should not be judged simply for their station in life, but for their deeds, for their strengths, for their convictions and dedications to their loved ones and causes they fight for. It is for this reason that Haurchefant is so willing to allow outsiders succor should they come across camp Dragonhead where he is stationed. Ishgard is cruel and cold in many ways, but he does not have to be.

One of the things Haurchefant values most in life is strength. He feels very drawn to it. According to him, some of that comes from his birth mother who was a beautiful and good woman but incredibly delicate and frail. After she passed he became fascinated with people who possessed spiritual and physical fortitude in equal measure. An aspect that drives him to not only work on his own physical strength and fitness, but one he admires in others. Those adventurers and mercenaries and all those willing to brave the harsh world they live in (even outside of Ishgard, obviously) are people he admires greatly, to the point where it is almost invasive. His near obsession with the Warrior of Light is clear in his excitement whenever he sees them or hears of what they have done, and he strives to befriend them so he may further aid in their cause and watch their adventure unfold. And is even willing to die for them to assure that they can continue to aid others with their abilities.

Which isn't to say he does not have his own causes to fight for. As a knight he has dedicated himself to protecting those who cannot protect themselves, and will quickly jump into situations to aid others if it is in his power to do so (and, sometimes, even when it's not). A habit that he often chides others for - telling them to not be reckless and then being reckless himself half a second later to assure that if anyone was going to be harmed in a scuffle, it was going to be him. He does not think ill of himself or his abilities, but he does believe he is expendable in the grand scheme of things - that he is not the hero in the story, but a companion meant to help the true hero. It is why he so avidly vies for the warrior of light, why he helps them gain access to the city and the political nonsense therein so they may help his people and they can finally see an outsiders point of view.

Haurchefant is often eccentric, and those servants and soldiers used to being around him are sometimes still baffled by how animated and excitable he can be - especially when a new adventurer is in town or something catches his interest. He talks with his hands, waxes poetic and long with impassioned speeches and tales he has heard when he is excited. He playfully flirts with those that have caught his eye - male or female, he does not care, so long as they are strong and good intentioned - and tries his best to keep spirits high. Of course, he is also representing his father and their nobility despite being a bastard, and while he is eccentric and a bit odd at times, he knows when to be playful and when to be serious, proving himself fit for the role he has been given leading those at dragonhead, and trusted by all that serve under him. If anything, it is his good natured demeanor that keeps them so loyal; knowing that he truly cares for them regardless of their stations, sharing meals and talking to them as if they were equals.
